Sorry we’ve skipped a few Piece of the Week posts since the new year but we’ve been busy getting amongst it and putting some paint on walls. To try and make up for our lack of posting we’re bringing you four pieces this week from Melbourne, Australia with local ladies JOSKE and SEAR taking CHOCK (UK) and IVEY (Syd) out for a paint to celebrate Australia Day AKA Invasion Day.
Australia Day celebrates the arrival of the First Fleet on Australian shores and proclamation of British sovereignty. To the more aware, it represents the theft of land and the beginning of years of injustice towards the Indigenous people of Australia. However, to most Australian’s it’s a day off work and one huge piss up. These themes have been represented on the wall.

I was a bit ‘meh’ about the last, very floral, Nike x Liberty collection so I was happy to see the much more edgier print and neon highlights in the recent collabo. If you’re not a fan of the wedge sneaker, the collection also has an Air Max 1 and some running styles as well as a rare letterman jacket (see below pics). If you follow us on Facebook you may have noticed our post encouraging everyone to watch the live stream of our friend Jessica Pabón presenting her talk on female writers at the 2012 TEDxWomen event, The Space Between. Our Aussie friends are forgiven for not watching it as the time difference between here and Washington DC, where the event was held, meant the broadcast occurred at an unholy hour on a Sunday morning. Fortunately if you missed it, it’s right here on YouTube. Yay for technology! Jessica presents a really insightful talk about how she came about researching female writers, the women she has connected with, their work and the world in which they operate. This week’s piece of the week is from Swedish artist/designer, Amara Por Dios who is currently rocking lots of work in the UK.
This artwork was recently completed in Brick Lane, London. A little different to the type of pieces we usually post for the ‘piece of the week’ (I’ll admit it, I’m a letters girl to the core and my bias has shown) I really admire Amara’s use of design elements and principles to create striking compositions.
Amara is also a hardcore sneaker freak and sells prints, tees, stickers and other goodies featuring her artwork on her website.
